The Problem:
Preventable Falls

87% of adults age 65 and over want to stay in their current home and community as they age.

Studies show that some 70% of older adults live in single-family detached homes, and nearly 90% intend to remain in their homes permanently.*

Over 35% of older adults reported having some type of disability, which includes difficulty hearing, vision, cognition, ambulation, self-care, or independent living.

Millions of these individuals live in homes that lack accessibility features that support the ability to live safely and independently.*

Each year, about $50 billion is spent on medical costs related to non-fatal fall injuries, and $754 million is spent related to fatal falls.

In Contra Costa County in 2004, 2,254 adults over the age of 60 were hospitalized with a mean hospitalization cost of $52,447.*

The cost of home modifications can range from very low-cost solutions like adding brighter lighting to thousands of dollars for significant adaptions, such as adding a ramp.
